Appliance Tips
If your refrigerator is not running or is not cold enough…
Self-defrosting refrigerators all have a set of coils and a cooling fan, usually under the unit that needs to be cleaned regularly. If these coils get coated with dust, dirt or lint, the refrigerator may not cool properly. The coils may appear to be a thin, black, wide radiator-like device behind the lower kick-panel. To clean them, disconnect the unit from the power source; use a special condenser brush (available at Appliance Accessories stores) and your vacuum cleaner to clean the coils of any lint, pet hair, etc. You may not be able to get to the entire condenser from the front; it may be necessary to clean the remainder of the condenser from the rear of the refrigerator. Then plugged the refrigerator back into the power source immediately. Do allow 24hr for the inside temps to regulate. If after monitoring the temps the next day, you find that the unit is still running continuously, call our qualified technician for service.
If the door is sticking or not closing properly…
Wipe off the face of the gasket with a wet rag and make sure the interior shelves, drawers and food are not preventing the door from closing from the inside.
The icemaker has completely stopped producing ice…
Check to see whether the icemaker has been turned off. Here’s how to check. Look for a wire along the right side of the ice maker that looks a bit like a coat hanger. If this wire is in the raised position, the icemaker is turned off. On some units you simply lower the wire to the down position to turn the icemaker on. On others, you lower a small red plastic lever to lower the wire. If the wire is in the proper position check the freezer temperature, it should be between 0-8 degrees Fahrenheit. If it is warmer than 10-12 degrees, the icemaker may not produce any ice. Check your door seals and thermostat repair/replace as necessary.
If the stove won’t bake or broil…
If neither the bake nor the broiler heating elements heat, but the range burners still work, the clock may be set for a timed or self-cleaning cycle. Check to be sure the clock buttons and knobs are set properly. If your clock has a knob that says push for manual push the knob in and try the baking and broiling elements again. If it still does not operate properly, you probably have a defect in the thermostat, selector switch, or common wiring.
If the unit does not have a separate bake/broil/etc. selector switch, the problem may be with the thermostat. But it’s not easy to check the selector switch or thermostat for proper operation. If you suspect a problem in this area, call our qualified appliance technician.
The door won’t close…..
If the door has gotten bent or warped (maybe you rested something heavy on it…), you need to remove the door, disassemble it, and straighten it. You can lift most oven doors off of their hinges by opening the door several inches to its first stop, and lifting the entire door straight up.
If the hinges have become worn, damaged, or bent, you probably need to replace them. We recommend replacing both hinges at the same time, to prevent uneven wear of the undamaged hinge.
Self-cleaning problem…
The self-cleaning system on a gas is fairly complex. To be able to set and use the self-cleaning feature, you need to read and understand the instructions in your owner’s manual. If you have problems with this system, call our qualified appliance technician.
GAS SMELL!
Warning… if you smell gas coming from your unit, you may be in danger! You may, of course, get a brief whiff of gas as you light a surface burner… but if you smell gas at any other time… turn off the gas to the appliance IMMEDIATELY. Then call your local gas company ask them to pin point the source of the gas. If the problem persists have our qualified appliance technician diagnose it.
If the clothes are not getting dry…
Make sure the dryer is not pushed back against the rear exhaust duct causing an airflow restriction. Pull the dryer out away from the wall. Unhook the vent from the dryer completely. Do not put anything over the dryer exhaust on the back of the dryer. Do a normal load with the vent unhooked. If it dries better or ok like this then the problem is in the dyer exhaust venting. Like a blocked vent pipe or a smashed or restricted vent hose.
If the vent doesn’t make a difference, then check the blower wheel for excessive lint builds up, DO NOT TRY WHILE DRYER IS RUNNING. Check that there isn’t anything stuck to the air intake baffle inside the drum (i.e. the screen on the back wall of the dryer when looking into the drum). Check the lint filter chute for blockage.
Make sure the cloths are coming out of the washer-spun damp dry. If the washer is not spinning the clothes damp dry, the dryer will not dry the clothes in a normal amount of time. Washer repair
If the disposal jams/hums…
Turn the disposal off. After turning the disposal off, remove anything that has fallen into the grinding chamber. Insert an “unjamming” tool into the bottom and turn clockwise. Once the tool turns freely, remove whatever was causing the jam.
If the disposal is dead…
Press the red reset button located on the bottom of the disposal. If the disposal begins to hum and the reset trips again, it is still jammed. Repeat step #2 and #3.
Tech Tip – always use cold water when operating the disposal and run the water a few minutes before and after as well as during use. The disposal works by grinding the garbage into a “puree” and water acts as a lubricant to move the matter through the pipe. Letting the water run before use will coat the pipes. Running water during the disposal process helps liquefy the garbage, and keeping the tap flowing afterward helps “wash down” food particles, which remain in your disposal, can cause odors. Put a combination of ice cubes and a tiny wedge of lemon to help if this problem occurs.
If the dishes are not getting clean…
Make sure the water is hot enough. It should be at least 140 degrees, which is hot enough to burn you – VERY HOT! If it is not hot enough though, turn the hot Water_heater thermostat up to a higher setting. Also draw the hottest water up at your kitchen sink first to guarantee the water is it's hottest then start your dishwasher to assure the best cleaning and sanitizing for your dishes.
Make sure the lower spray arm is unobstructed and turning freely. Make sure the bottom inside the dishwasher is clean and free of debris.
Clean your dishwasher filter. On many basic and/or European models, there’s a filter near the bottom, or under the lower spray arm, that needs cleaning regularly. If you have this sort of filter, consult your dishwasher owner’s manual for how to remove and clean it. If the filter is damaged, replace it to protect the dishwasher’s pump and motor seals.
Make sure you are following the proper loading procedures. Use the proper amount of detergent and make sure the detergent is fresh (check expiration or “best if used by” date.)
If the door isn’t closing… Make sure the latch assembly is unrestricted and latching properly. Make sure nothing is blocking the door from opening and closing properly.
If the unit is leaking… Make sure you are following the proper loading procedures, including proper type and amounts of detergents. Run the unit through cycle while empty – if it doesn’t leak, it’s probably a loading problem.
Make sure the tracks are positioned properly. Make sure the door is unrestricted around the opening.
Tech Tip – If the inside of your dishwasher is beginning to brown and form mineral stains, put Limeaway (available at your grocery store) or Tang Citrus Drink into the tub area during the wash cycle. The citric acid from these products will remove the mineral building up and restore the finish.
